The bacteria involved in the Larimer County outbreak are Neisseria meningitidis, serogroup C, …

An additional case of meningococcal meningitis that occurred at the same time as the hockey league outbreak (June 2010) did not grow out Neisseria meningitidis, but was identified by CDC (using PCR testing) as meningococcal serogroup B.

Approximately 11 000 persons received free vaccinations in November and December 2010.

Although 6 of the northern Colorado outbreak cases had not been vaccinated for meningococcal disease, the 2 most recent cases in CSU students — one of which was fatal — had both received meningococcal conjugate vaccine in 2006.

http://wp.me/pPrkZ-eG Colorado State University CSU

The most recent case [8人目] was a CSU student [コロラド州立大学の学生] who was hospitalized in early December 2010 with a meningococcal disease. He was released from Poudre Valley Hospital about a week later and is believed to be doing well at his parents’ home out of state.

The linked cases include illnesses that killed a Metro State College [student] [発端症例 太字は死亡患者] in April 2010; caused a disabling case of meningitis in a CSU student in May 2010; led to 3 fatal meningococcal cases among 3 Fort Collins hockey players in June 2010; caused a less severe case in a hockey player’s child in August 2010; and killed a CSU student in October 2010.
Metropolitan State College of Denver

“The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s lab has confirmed that the bacteria that caused the recent infection were Group C meningococcal bacteria (also called Neisseria meningitidis, serogroup C [髄膜炎菌 血清型群 C]).
In addition, special molecular “fingerprinting” tests (called PFGE [pulsed field gel electrophoresis] tests) allowed them to confirm 8 of these cases were caused by identical strains [

Four of the 8 cases reported in Larimer County since May 2010 have been fatal.

All the 4 fatal cases in Larimer County have been from meningococcal sepsis [ラリマー郡の死亡例 4患者の死因は髄膜菌性敗血症], rather than meningococcal meningitis.

Since meningitis is spread through contact with infected saliva or nasal fluids, it is also possible that this outbreak was transmitted through spitting [唾を吐く] during the game or sharing of water bottles [水筒の共用], …

The average incubation period for meningococcal meningitis is 4 days, ranging between 2 and 10 days

An outbreak of meningococcal disease in either an organization or community is defined as the occurrence of 3 or more confirmed or probable cases during a period of less than or equal to 3 months, resulting in a primary disease attack rate in the population at risk (such as, hockey team in the outbreak in the news release above) of at least 10 cases per 100 000 persons, which is about 10 times greater than the normal occurrence
