Cross-reactivity of antibodies to viruses belonging to the Semliki forest serocomplex.
マヤロウイルス Mayaro virus はセムリキ森林血清複合体 Semliki forest serocomplex — 発熱、関節炎の臨床症状を来たす チクングニヤウイルス chikungunya virus などの旧世界アルファウイルス old world alphavirus の集団 — の 1つであるが、マヤロウイルス感染症は、いまだ南米に限定している。南アメリカで発生する他のアルファウイルス alphavirus (いわゆる 新世界アルファウイルス New World alphaviruses) として Eastern equine encephalitis virus 東部ウマ脳炎ウイルス , Western equine encephalitis virus 西部ウマ脳炎ウイルス and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus ベネズエラウマ脳炎ウイルスなどが属している。臨床症状は中枢神経系症状を特徴とし、関節痛ではない。

チクングニヤウイルスとマヤロウイルスは同じ抗原複合体 antigenic complex, セムリキ森林血清複合体 Semliki forest serocomplex に属するアルファウイルスであり、… 著者らは ELISA法を用いる血清学的検査で両ウイルス抗体の交差反応を検出した。
マヤロウイルス抗体の特異性を証明するためには血清中和検査 seroneutralization test が必要である。…
南米では チクングニヤウイルス感染症は発生しないとされていたが、国際旅行の増加、地球温暖化および貿易増大の結果として媒介生物 ベクターの拡散により、節足動物媒介ウイルス arthropod-borne virus による感染症は地球規模で拡大しているようであり、結果的に地方的な流行の地域が重複する可能性がある。

In the light of the recent spread of chikungunya virus to the Indian Ocean islands and of the spread of other arboviruses from the Old World to the New (e.g. West Nile virus), it seems important, as the writer of the article suggests, to verify that the infection reported was really due to Mayaro virus. Alternatively, this may be the first indication that CHIK virus has spread to the Americas.

Normally, ProMED-mail does not post imported cases such as this one that originate in an endemic area and arrive in a country where ongoing transmission is unlikely or not possible. Mayaro virus is endemic in Brazil and the possibility of transmission in France is not likely. This case was posted because it is unique as the 1st reported Mayaro virus infection imported into Europe and because Mayaro virus infection can be clinically similar enough to dengue virus infections, indicating that a thorough travel history supported by comprehensive laboratory testing is important for making a differential diagnosis. ...
