米国ノースカロライナ州 Wayne ウェイン郡 Mount Olive マウント オリーブ町[人口 4410人 2006年 Wikipedia 南部の一部はデュプリン郡] の介護施設 Glen Care of Mount Olive 入所者がB型肝炎ウイルスに感染。2010年8月から 5人死亡(63-83歳)、3人感染(生存)。全 8人は、blood-glucose monitoring [, monitoring of blood glucose levels] 血糖値モニター[測定]を受けていた。blood-glucose monitor 血糖測定器 (glucose monitor, glucometer, glucose meter) は時々、一緒に保管し、入居者の名前を付けなかった (同じ測定器を異なる入所者に使用した可能性が高い)。デバイスも毎回の使用後、消毒しなかった。糖尿病を有する入居者の B型肝炎発生率は 他の入居者の 15倍。

Glen Care officials said on Thursday [11 Nov 2010] that the center’s staff weren’t responsible for the hepatitis outbreak. Medical technicians said they had never used glucose monitors on different patients.

State investigators said they couldn’t determine the source of the outbreak, noting the center is open to relatives and other visitors and that residents are free to come and go. Davies [, North Carolina's state epidemiologist,] called the situation tragic and said Glen Care needs to strengthen its infection-control practices.
