Picornaviridae ピコルナウイルス科 Enterovirus エンテロウイルス属に分類されるポリオウイルス以外のエンテロウイルスには約 100の血清型が知られている。
Although there was an increase in reported EV71 detections in the United States during 2006–2008, EV71 detections were uncommon.

以前、echovirus エコーウイルス 22 , 23 と分類されていたウイルスは Parechovirus パレコウイルス属の human parechoviruses ヒトパレコウイルス (HPeVs) [それぞれ human parechovirus type1 (HPeV1), human parechovirus type2 (HPeV2)]に最近、再分類された。
HPeV1 was one of the 15 most common detections during 2006–2008; no other HPeV types were reported during that period. HPeV cannot be detected by EV- specific assays.
