Anthrax outbreak hits Bangladesh leather and meat sectors
イスラム教徒の宗教的祝祭である 犠牲祭 [ Eid al-Adha Wikipedia] の一環として、[毎年]数百万の畜牛が食肉処理され、この期間に国内の年間のほぼ 40%に相当する皮革が調達されると推定。
2010年の 犠牲祭 Eid-ul-Azha [Moslem festival of sacrifice of cattle in November] は 11月16日-19日 [ProMED-mail Archive Number 20100924.3461]。

Leather handbags, boots, jackets, belts and ornamental goods are exported to the USA, Italy, Germany, Japan, Korea and China. …

At the moment, they can only hope the anthrax outbreak will subside gradually. Otherwise it could spell disaster for a Bangladeshi industry worth some USD 500m to the impoverished country [貧困国].

The minister went on to draw a comparison of the anthrax spread this year [2010] with previous years, saying,

“In 2008, 437 cows were affected by anthrax and 156 died. In 2009, 449 were affected and 114 died. This year [2010], until now, only 104 cows have been infected of which 37 died. Another 11 cows were culled.”

I am informed by my colleagues at ICDDRB (International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh),
同国の皮膚炭疽(ヒト)症例に対して、ニューキノロン系抗菌薬 ciprofloxacin シプロフロキサシン 1回量 成人 500mg (or 小児 10 mg/kg )× 2回/日× 10日間投与有効。死亡例なし。

ミャンマーから炭疽菌に汚染した畜牛などがバングラデシュなどの隣国に入る越境貿易の長年の問題も発覚。

Anthrax cases among humans have so far spread to nearly 1/6th of the districts [県] of Bangladesh since the south Asian country recorded the 1st virus-infected patient on 18 Aug 2010, official data showed Tuesday [14 Sep 2010]. There is a photo attached to this report of dead pigeons littering the ground. Whatever they died of, it was not anthrax as small and medium sized birds are resistant to infection with Bacillus anthracis; their body temperature is too high to allow infection. On the other hand dogs and cats would be infected if they had lapped up the infected blood. But their deaths were very rapid. I suspect someone had wittingly or unwittingly put out some poison. But it sure made for good copy and heightening everyone's fears. This points up the need for making sure that the journalists reporting on an event are properly briefed.
