Subject PRO/EDR> Japanese encephalitis & other – India: (UP)
数十人の小児が脳炎症状を来たし、[インド北部 ネパールと国境を接する] Uttar Pradesh ウッタル プラデーシュ州 Gorakhpur district ゴーラクプル県の州立病院 1施設に入院した。インドでは 1978年[下段 ※ ご参照下さい]、最初に発見された病気で以来、数千人の子どもが脳炎で死亡し、生存者は身体に障害を来たしたり、精神異常となっている。
本疾患のシーズンではないが、それでも現時点で 210人が治療を受けている。モンスーンが到来すると脳炎患者の増加が予想され、[2010年] 12月まで続く可能性がある。”日本脳炎 Japanese encephalitis は蚊によって伝染するので衛生状態が必要である。蚊の成長をコントロールし、個人衛生を確保する必要がある。”と、国立ウイルス研究所の研究担当の医師は語った。
専門家によると、脳炎ワクチンはモンスーンの約 3ヶ月前に実施すべきであるが、現時点ではそのような措置は行われていない。2006年、政府は脳炎ワクチン接種キャンペーンを開始したが、そのキャンペーンの恩恵を受けた子どもの数は、ほんのわずかであった。
脳炎は通常、1-15歳の子どもがかかる。

ゴーラクプル県 region of Gorakhpur の脳炎報告数は 2009年、500人以上で、原因は日本脳炎 ウイルス (JEV)、他の原因不明の急性脳炎である。後者は エンテロウイルス enterovirus や ニパウイルス Nipah virus と思われるが、今回の脳炎発生について原因の情報はない。
